Bathroom remodeling costs, like those of any big remodeling project, will vary tremendously based on several factors, but primarily on labor and materials.  The range can be dramatic, from a low of under $2000 for a partial remodel of a half bathroom with simple fixtures up to $60,000 or more to get the spa-like master bath retreat you have always dreamt of.  Remodeling a standard size bathroom with standard fixtures can often come in under $10,000.  Below are a few of the major factors which will affect the final cost to remodel your bathroom.  The good news with bathroom remodeling is that the cost is often largely offset by increased resale value of the home.  According to the National Association of Realtors, a midrange bathroom remodel will recoup, on average, 102% of its cost, whereas an upscape bathroom remodel will recoupt about 89% of its cost.  That being said, in a down housing market you should not invest money into your home expecting to receive more than a return on your original investment.  We always recommend getting multiple bids for remodeling projects.  Click here to get bathroom remodeling quotes in your area.

How  Do Bath/Shower Combinations Affect the Cost of Remodeling a Bathroom?

A custom shower with separate Jacuzzi tub will obviously add a lot to the cost vs. an off-the-shelf model from Home Depot.  In some cases, you may not have to replace your tub or shower.  A new showerhead, a few new tiles and a new door can make a dramatic difference in the look and feel of your shower and or bath tub.

How do Countertops/Flooring Factor into the Cost of Remodeling a Bathroom?

Just like with kitchens, you can go upscale or downscale depending on your type of home and your budget.  Deluxe granite countertops are top of the line.  Laminate coverings are lower end and proportionally less expensive.  The main consideration is to keep the quality of the countertops in line with the other aspects of the bathroom and your home.  Few things can hurt the perceived value of your home like having cheap countertops in an otherwise beautiful space.  Likewise, granite tile floors will look much more appropriate in upper end designs vs. the more budget approach of vinyl tiles.  Make sure to choose the option which is in line with the age, style and look of your home, or you risk deflating the value.  Conversely, if you go over the top with the bathroom remodel, it can make the rest of the home look dated.  Be sure to consider this project holistically, not as a one off decision.

How do Cabinets Affect the Cost of Remodeling a Bathroom?

Cabinets are another area that can cause large swings in the cost to remodel a bathroom.  Custom cabinets can be much more expensive, but also much more appealing, than off-the-shelf models.  Before committing to new cabinets, consider cabinet refacing which can be 1/3 the price and gives your existing cabinets doors a face lift by removing the existing finish and applying a new one along with new handles and knobs.  To get quotes for cabinet refacing, click here.

How Does Square FootageFactor into the Cost of Remodeling a Bathroom?

Just like with all remodeling projects, size matters.  A bigger bathroom remodel will be more expensive than a smaller one.  If the cost gets out of line, you can always consider a partial remodel where you replace the countertops, flooring and wall coverings but keep the existing cabinets,  shower/tub  and toilet.

Does Lighting Really Affect the Cost of Remodeling a Bathroom?

Recessed lights add a modern look compared with overhead lights, and are often not a huge contributor to cost.

How Much Should a Toliet/Bidet Cost?

There was an episode of The Apprentice where The Donald tasked his teams with renovating two small motel properties.  One team leader blew half the budget replacing toilets in all the bathrooms.  You can guess who got fired that week.  The most important factor with a toilet is that it is clean and it works.  Aside from that, your neighbors won’t stand around talking about your toilet like they will talk about your granite countertops.

How Does Hardware Impact a Bathroom Remodel?

One area where you should not skimp is hardware.  Nice hardware can make or break or your bathroom remodel.  It’s the little touches that create a “feel” which either impresses or turns people off.  They cannot always place their finger on why, but they usually know what they like and don’t like.  Nice hardware is an important component of creating this feel.

Does Your Zip Code Really Impact the Cost of Remodeling a Bathroom?

Just like with all remodeling, labor in certain parts of the country is simply more expensive.  (Think the coasts.)  Not much you can do about this except take solace in knowing that your home value is probably much higher than for something equivalent in an area where labor is less expensive.

For the avid do it yourselfer, a bathroom remodel is a doable job, although we strongly recommend you examine local pricing and ordinances about permits before you begin.
